October outings: Mistra Bay on a Windy Day

October outings have been few and far between, and rather short! One of our outings this month took us to Mistra Bay. This little inlet in the north of Malta is not far from Xemxija and offers views across the sea towards St Paul's Bay and Qawra.

The weather was quite windy! However this didn't stop many campers from pitching their tent for the weekend. There were also a number of caravans parked to the side. The beach isn't the most picturesque in Malta, there isn't golden sand or pebbles, rather a mixture of seaweed. The bay is also used for boating, and there is a slipway.

Stormy weather ahead...
Visiting without a car can be little tricky, the easiest way would be to get off the bus on the Xemxija - Mellieha main road. There is a countrypath leading to the beach. It's a pleasant walk, although it does add a little to the journey.

To the right a trail goes uphill, passing the fire services station and going to Xemxija. We walked to our left and soon found ourselves near Mistra Battery. This building is an artillery battery, and used to serve as part of Malta's coastal defense system. It's now in the hands of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, although I am not sure when, if, it is open.  For a more detailed account of the historical facts, click here.

The landscape quickly changes to dramatic cliffs. From Rdum il-Biez you can enjoy the views of St. Paul's Islands without walking too far.

Do take care along the cliffs, though! There are cracks close to the edges in some places, so it's important to keep a safe distance away.
